What finally got me to ditch the plastic and get stainless steel instead
(It wasn’t the environment)
1. Fancy a side of plastic with your water?
Microplastics (urgh) have been found in tap water too, but not early to the same concentration as in most bottled water brands*. Some of the plastic particles are small enough to pass the gastrointestinal wall straight into your body. It’s unknown what risks this poses for us, but I sure don’t want to be an experiment, do you?
2. Your Plastic Bottle: A Harmful Bacteria Incubator
You take a sip or two of your bottled water, leave it in the hot car, come back later for a few more sips… during the time you were away, the heat and bacteria from your sip worked their dark magic and voila, you have potentially serious health consequences*.
3. Chemicals in small doses are ok (thanks, Mayo Clinic…)
BPA is an endocrine-disrupting chemical found in certain re-usable hard plastic water bottles. BPA has led to higher instances of infertility, breast and prostate cancer*. The Mayo Clinic says it’s not harmful in small does as found in bottled water… but it’s also found in a lot of other products where ‘small doses’ becomes ‘BIG doses’.
4. Bottled water isn’t safer than tap water
It was surprising for me to find out that bottled water is not regulated against the same strict regulations as tap water*. Instead of regular quality inspections, you’re looking at inspection once every 3 years on average!
5. BPA-Free! BUT what is this replacement chemical I see?
There’s an outcry about BPA, so it’s replaced with BPS, there’s no outcry against BPS and it’s replaced with [Fill in the Blank]? That’s circle of chemical confusion for you*.
As health-conscious folks, we may or may not be driven by environmental concerns, but our well-being is super-sacred to us.
We choose not to compromise our health, and ditching plastic is fast becoming a hard-and-fast rule in many families (including our own.)
